Dr Sanduk Ruit hospitalized, likely to be discharged on Tuesday

Senior eye surgeon and founder of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology Dr Sanduk Ruit has been admitted at Norvic International Hospital due to dengue.

“Dr Ruit is recovering and is likely to be discharged on Tuesday,” a source close to Dr Ruit confirmed. Born in the remote village of Olangchung Gola of Taplejung in 1955. Ruit has restored sights of tens of thousands across the globe using small-incision cataract surgery.

He was awarded Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2006 for developing the low-cost intraocular lens to put into the eye after cataract surgery.

Dr Ruit brought the cost of intraocular lens to as low as US$ 3 from around US$ 100 making it affordable for impoverished people across Asia and Africa. He has held free eye camps conducting surgeries in Bhutan, Indonesia, Myanmar, North Korea and many African countries apart from Nepal.
